Finding the right Personal Trainer

There are so many reasons why having a Personal Trainer can be essential to achieving your fitness goals, whether they be weight loss based, sports driven or for athletic purposes. Everybody is different, and that means everyone’s abilities and requirements are different when it comes to exercise. This could be anything from having an old injury that requires specific exercises to having a phobia that may impact on where or how you work out.

People usually turn to a personal trainer to help them to train for a particular event such as a charity run, a triathlon you’ve had on your bucket list or most commonly for people to get in shape for their wedding.

The benefits of having a personal trainer are endless. Sometimes life gets hectic, with so much pressure from work and other stresses you feel like you’re in a boxing bout that never ends. A personal trainer can make you feel like you finally have someone in your corner, and they are not giving up on you.

When it comes to choosing a personal trainer, we’re all ultimately looking for the same thing: someone affordable, experienced, results driven and with a winning personality.

What makes a personal trainer stand out from the rest?

  • The best personal trainers are genuinely invested in their clients' progress. They care. Ask yourself: whatever the profession, how many people do you know who really care about the people they work with? It’s a rare and unusual quality in any walk of life; those who demonstrate it go far in life because they stand out from the crowd.
  • Part coach, part motivator, part movement specialist, part nutritionist and part inspiration. You need to be able to look at your trainer and see that he/she walks the talk.
  • Everyone wants to achieve their goals straight away, whether they be weight loss, rock hard abs or hulk like strength. But these are not always achievable, and if you don’t hit them then you may be discouraged and give up.
  • A really good personal trainer will ensure you only set realistic goals that you will be able to achieve - if you put in the effort, of course - and they will also be able to keep you on track to hit those goals. They will check in with you daily, they don’t just say goodbye at the gym door, they are invested in your progress and may keep you on track with encouragement bordering on nagging!
  • A good personal trainer uses mirrors all the time – but not to check themselves out. Rather than looking at their own reflection, they should be using the mirror to examine your exercise form & technique from every possible angle. This will help them provide cues to correct your exercise posture, which always slips during a workout as you tire.
  • They will also ensure they keep good records of your progress, are super organised & prepared for your sessions, turn up on time and the most important part, will not be flicking through their phone whilst counting your reps out in a monotonous tone – yes BEWARE those kinds of trainers are out there!
  • Lastly, in this day and age having a personal trainer is a luxury spend. Finding the best PT for a fair price is super important but difficult to judge as an outsider, so make sure check out their client reviews and references before taking the plunge.
